If you intend to put physical library material on reserve for fall semester, we’re prepared to begin the process now. The more material we process early in August, the quicker the turnaround time will be for processing reserves for faculty who submit items in late August when everyone returns to campus.
Full instructions can be found here.

A Terrible Beauty? Women, Media, and the Irish Struggle for Independence
Dr. Karen Steele, Associate Professor and Director of Women’s Studies TCU
April 17, 2009 @ 7 p.m. Library Conference Room
“Women, Press, and Politics” explores the literary and historical significance of women’s writing for the most influential body of nationalist journalism during the Irish Revival, the advanced nationalist press. This work studies women’s writings in the Irish nationalist tradition, focusing in particular on leading female voices in the cultural and political movements that helped launch the Easter Rising of 1916: Augusta Gregory, Alice Milligan, Maud Gonne, Constance Markievicz, Delia Larkin, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington, and Louise Bennett. Karen Steele argues that by examining the innovative work of these writers from the perspective of women’s artistry and women’s political investments, we can best appreciate the expansive range of their cultural productions and the influence these had on other nationalists, who went on to shape Irish politics and culture in the decades to come.

The TCU Library online catalog is now enriched with links to PBS Frontline programs. Frontline is one of many excellent PBS series with full-length programs viewable online from PBS.org. The Library also offers PBS programs on DVD. One of Frontline’s recent titles, The Persuaders, is a must-see for the media-savvy. The Persuaders explores how the cultures of marketing and advertising have come to influence not only what Americans buy and for whom they vote, but what they know, and how well they understand the world around them.

A recent report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project predicts that mobile devices will be the “primary connection tool to the Internet for most people in the world in 2020.” The TCU community has already embraced a variety of smart phones, including iPhones, BlackBerries and Android phones, and the library has developed a website optimized for these devices.
Many of these new smart phones are able to use the regular library website; however, this new site for mobile devices is designed for small screens and quick inquiries. Users can check library hours and contact information as well as search the catalog using a simplified interface. Instructions for texting questions to the reference staff are given, and directions to the campus and the library are available for TCU guests.
The mobile devices site is available at http://lib.tcu.edu/m.

TCU holds the correspondence of the Texas Legation, the embassy in Washington DC before Texas was a state. The exhibit shows what some of the 172-year-old letters look like. Their contents, according to history Professor Gregg Cantrell, cover money, annexation, personal matters and inquiries into land and employment opportunities in Texas.
The exhibit has likenesses of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, principals in the making of Texas, and old maps illustrating how the area was apportioned at that time. Burnt edges on some of the letters reveal the rough treatment the documents endured during the long period when they were lost. Since then, they have been restored, and their scanned facsimiles may be seen in Special Collections.
Mark Wright writes about the Texas Legation Records, putting the papers into historical and personal perspective in “Reading the Papers,” The TCU Magazine, Summer 2007.
