Basically, it contains some websites for self-assessment of career interests and websites that describe the nature, typical day, salary ranges, etc. of various careers. As an added bonus, some of the websites give job hunting advice, industry information, etc.

The World Bank is publishing a website that “provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement across 183 economies and selected cities at the subnational and regional level.” The website covers topics such as Starting a Business, Licenses, Registering Property, Getting Credit, Trading Across Borders, Enforcing Contracts, and Protecting Investors.

Harvard Business Review Case Studies

Case studies that have been published in the Harvard Business Review can be found in the TCU database, Business Source Complete. To find a particular study, type the title of the study in the one box (omit a, an, the, if the title begins with one of those words) and put the title in quotation marks. In the other box, type Harvard business review and select “SO Publication Name” in the drop down box. (See the example below)

BE AWARE that HBR as a company does not necessarily publish all of their case studies in their journal. If the case study is not in Business Source Complete, you will have to go to the website, http://harvardbusiness.org and click on the “case studies” link at the bottom of the page. You will have to pay to download the case studies from their website.

REITs

Looking for Real Estate Investment Trust information? Here’s some of the TCU databases that provide that information:

MorningStar (only allows 2 users at a time): Click on the Industries link under the Industries category (see screen shot). This takes you into an alphabetical listing of industries. Scroll down until you find the REITS link. Voila!

Value Line Research Center (only allows 6 users at a time): Left-hand navigation bar- click “Standard Edition”. Go down to the “Look Up Industry” box and hover your mouse until the entire box turns dark grey and click (see screen shot). Scroll down the alphabetical industry list until you find the R.E.I.T. link.

Note: The PDF next to the REIT link provides ValueLine’s overall assessment of that industry. Once you click the REIT link, you are taken into a listing of companies… Another NOTE- the pdf and html pages next to the each company’s name contain some overlapping but some different info. It pays to look at both.

Mergent Online (only allows 15 users at a time): Click the “Enter Mergent Online” tab on the left side.

In the Classification box in the center of the page, select “Prim. NAICS” and enter 531 into the search box. This basically takes you into a listing of companies in the Real Estate industry.

Country Research

Trying to figure out rules of business etiquette in Botswana? Check out the TCU database, Global Road Warrior. It covers lots of other areas too: Business Women, Money and Banking, Travel Essentials, Country Facts, etc.

Wanting an investment overview of Bangladesh? Try the TCU database, CountryWatch. Click on the “Country Reviews” tab at the top. It also has lots of good stuff: Political overviews, Economic Overviews, Envrionmental Overviews, etc.

There is some overlap between the two databases, but there are also many unique features.

Wanting more? Try Country Commercial Guides located in our database, StatUSA. After entering the database, click on StatUSA again, and then Globus & NTDB, then scroll down to the link into Country Commercial Guides.

Country Commerical Guides contain info such as, market conditions, best export sectors, trade regulations, marketing strategies, services for exporters, etc. It’s our government’s attempt to help business exports/imports.

Financial Services Fact Book Website

Here’s a nice website that I came across while going through book review cards (Ironic, isn’t it?).

It is the Financial Services Fact Book, and the website provides information on the financial services industry including insurance, banking, mortgage, securities, and finance. I’ll provide a smattering of some of the data they provide: Mergers, Leading Companies, Educational Plans and Loans, National Savings, IT spendings, World Rankings, and Demographics.
